NHL 2017-18

Here's every single individual player statistic that I could find for everyone who played even a single game in the 2017-18 season, broken down by manpower situation. In total, there are several hundred stats per player from about a dozen different sources. This will save everyone the trouble of going to different sites, gathering the data, and mapping them together when there might be slight differences in player names (e.g. Matt Benning or Matthew Benning).

This is the 12th year that I've done this, and it's a bigger job every year. My first spreadsheet was back in 2006-07 for the few dozen members of Iain Fyffe's Hockey Analysis Group, which was a discussion board on Yahoo.

I should warn you that this is not an introductory document. While it does include basic stats, most of these are metrics that you'll have to look up if you're not familiar with them. I do have a glossary, but it's very brief. I've also done my best to organize them by category.

Initially, everything inside these spreadsheets come from official NHL play-by-play files and shift charts. However, people have extracted some rather clever statistics from them, like figuring out which shots were rebounds, or counting up how many hits a player has received, not just how many he's thrown.

Because of all the hard work involved, it's pretty important to us that you recognize the contributions and support the work of those who make this information available for all of us. Not only does that include those at the NHL itself, but also Hockey Reference, Emmanuel Perry's Corsica Hockey, Natural Stat Trick, and Craig Tabita's Puck Base. There's a full list of acknowledgements on the ABOUT tab, so please check it out.

For some stats, there's no official count, and slight variations from one source to another. If the stat was important enough, I included a separate column for each source, and you can decide which one to use.

Due to the sheer number of stats, most of this is just the raw data, and you'll have to calculate the wide variety of different rates and percentages yourself. You can derive virtually any statistic you want from this base data, but I've included only the most common, like shooting percentage, points per 60 minutes, and PDO.

As always, if you have any contributions, or suggestions, or find any errors, please contact me over email or social media. And, check in regularly because we do add additional stats throughout the summer, as they become available.  Thanks for all of your support!

May 14, 2018: Added several stats, such as what equipment players wear, how many icings occur when they're on the ice, clutch scoring, and more.
