Ils sont: Helmut Neher, étudiant diplômé de l'Université de Waterloo, qui a écrit Pose Estimation of Players in Hockey Videos using Convolutional Neural Networks ; et Jeremy Sylvain, un étudiant de premier cycle à l’Université de Saint-Laurent qui a écrit sur The Probability and Severity of Man Games Lost Due to Injury in an NHL Season.

Rob Vollman releases Hockey Abstract 2017

posted Aug 8, 2017, 8:40 AM by Heidi Gammuac

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 8, 2017

Calgary, Canada - Hockey analytics pioneer Rob Vollman has released Hockey Abstract 2017, the fourth book in the series of the same name.

Rob Vollman’s Hockey Abstract 2017 is a fun and informative guide for hockey fans both new and experienced with hockey analytics. The 2017 publication contains over 300 pages of fresh analysis, including new player usage charts, which is an analytics concept created by Vollman. This year’s edition also has analysis for all 31 NHL teams, including its newest team, the Vegas Golden Knights.

“I’m excited to release another edition of Hockey Abstract,” says Vollman. “I thoroughly enjoy preparing the book each year. It is a lot of work, but it is incredibly rewarding.”

Along with Vollman’s analysis, Hockey Abstract 2017 also has a foreword by Rob Kerr, illustrations by Joshua Smith, and contributions from Tom Awad, Matt Cane, Allan Mitchell, Sydney Stype, and Charles Mousseau. Vollman also awarded opportunities to two students at the Ottawa Hockey Analytics Conference earlier this year to have their hockey analytics-related papers published in the book. They are: Helmut Neher, a graduate student at the University of Waterloo, who wrote Pose Estimation of Players in Hockey Videos using Convolutional Neural Networks; and Jeremy Sylvain, an undergraduate student at St. Lawrence University, who wrote on The Probability and Severity of Man Games Lost Due to Injury in an NHL Season.

Hockey fans can use Hockey Abstract to understand and enjoy the statistical perspective on topics such as team-level analysis, what artificial intelligence and hockey analytics have in common, who is the NHL’s best goalie, passer, hitter, shot-blocker, faceoff specialist, penalty-drawer, and more topical questions, like why Washington loses in the playoffs, and who won the Weber-Subban trade.

Rob Vollman’s Hockey Abstract 2017 is now available on Amazon, and a digital edition is also available on www.hockeyabstract.com. A French language version, Le Précis du Hockey 2017, will come out at the end of August.

Pioneer of hockey analytics inks new book deal

posted Mar 31, 2017, 1:09 PM by Heidi Gammuac   [ updated Mar 31, 2017, 1:09 PM ]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 31, 2017

Calgary, Canada – Rob Vollman, leading expert in the field of hockey analytics, three-time author and eight-time contributing author, is pleased to announce that he has signed a book deal to write the next edition of Hockey Abstract Presents… Stat Shot: The Ultimate Guide to Hockey Analytics.

“I'm honestly thrilled to see our relationship with Rob continue,” says Michael Holmes, editor at ECW Press. “He's easy to work with and his first book was an unqualified success. We've helped each other to the forefront of all books dealing with this material, and we've carved out a unique niche in the world of hockey publications. Working with him again will give us a unique opportunity to further build both his brand and on the success of the first Stat Shot.”

The follow-up to the 2016 bestseller Stat Shot will follow a similar format, but will also be geared to new readers without any background in statistical analysis. It features an introduction to the absolute basics of hockey statistics as well as the kind of ’Who is the best?’ analytics for which Vollman is famous. It is scheduled to be released in Fall 2018.

“I want to thank people for their support of my work,” says Vollman about his new book deal. “This is only possible because of the support people have shown for my books, and their enthusiasm for the material, which showed that there was a greater demand for hockey analytics references from fans.”

Vollman will also be releasing the 2017 edition of his popular anthology Hockey Abstract in August 2017.
